What is Saphris used for?
Used to treat schizophrenia in adults.
Also used for bipolar disorder.
How should I take Saphris?
Tablet dissolves under the tongue.
Do not chew, crush, or swallow whole.
Do not eat or drink for 10 minutes after taking.
Usually taken twice daily.
Available strengths: 5 mg, 10 mg
Common side effects
- Drowsiness
- Restlessness (akathisia)
- Headache
- Extrapyramidal symptoms
- Nausea/upset stomach
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Weight gain
Rare but serious side effects
- Agranulocytosis
- Stroke
- Severe allergic reaction
- DKA
- NMS
Warnings/Precautions
Not approved for dementia‑related psychosis.
Medication interactions
Interactions may occur with:
- Diphenhydramine
- Lorazepam, zopiclone
- Fentanyl
- Fluvoxamine (may increase levels)
Avoid alcohol or illegal drugs.
