Dealing With a Mental Health Crisis

This virtual workshop is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage mental health crises. This two-hour session is intended specifically for family members and individuals supporting a loved one with their mental health. As a caregiver, this session will provide valuable insights into recognizing the signs of a mental health crisis, and connecting individuals with appropriate support services, as well as steps that can be taken to prevent crisis relapses.

Sophie Hwang, M.S.W., R.S.W, Ph.D (Ed.)
Director, Support & Educational Services
Sophie is the director of support and educational services and the cognitive behavioural therapy for psychosis training lead at IAM Institute for Advancements in Mental Health. She provides support and services to individuals and family members who are impacted by a broad range of psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia. She also developed and delivers IAM’s Recovery in Action CBT group for individuals living with psychosis. She received her CBT training from the University of Toronto and the Beck Institute. A registered social worker, Sophie has an MSW from York University and an MEd in Counselling Psychology and a PhD in Education from the University of Toronto.

Baljit Panesar, MSW
Family and Clinical Counsellor
Baljit holds an Honours Bachelor of Applied Science (BaSC) from the University of Guelph-Humber and a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto. She is passionate about delivering trauma-informed care and has worked with diverse populations in her career. At the Institute of Advancements in Mental Health (IAM) she supports individuals via the Support Line, facilitating and co-facilitating a variety of psycho-educational groups, and assists both individuals and their family members who experiencing difficulties with mental health challenges.
