MAKING SENSE OF MEDICATION
The IAM Medication Resource Centre
The Medication Resource Centre provides information on antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications available in Canada, which are used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses. It includes general information on all medications approved by Health Canada as well as detailed information on specific medications, including dose ranges, side effects and drug interactions. The side effect lists stated for individual antipsychotic medications in this online resource are not comprehensive. They list some of the most common side effects individuals may experience, as well as some very rare side effects that can be serious if they occur. Discuss with your doctor and pharmacist the full range of side effects that may occur with your prescribed medication.
There is a glossary of terms at the end of the medication resource, which provides descriptions of medical terms you may not be familiar with.
This document has been reviewed by people living with schizophrenia, family members and Dr. Gary Remington, MD, PhD, FRCPC, Dr. Tony P. George, MD, FRCPC and Jamie Kellar, RPh, BScHK, BScPhm, PharmD, PhD.
The Medication Resource Centre is supported by Janssen Inc. (March 2012, updated May 2014, August 2016, December 2017, February 2019) and AbbVie (updated March 2022). Updated May 2023, December 2025.
Note: IAM defines treatment holistically, including medical support, community support and social support. Medication is just one part of the medical support piece and the overall care pathway in schizophrenia and psychotic illnesses.
